'We're not the favourites' - Golden Eagles captain insists ahead of U17 AFCON opener v Zambia
Published: April 29, 2023
Nigeria U17 captain Precious Williams was on media duties on Saturday ahead of the Golden Eaglets' opening Group B fixture against Zambia at the 2023 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
The HB Football Academy striker is on the same page as Nduka Ugbade, saying that the five-time world champions should not be labeled as favorites to win their group without kicking a ball.
Nigeria qualified for the 2023 U17 AFCON by virtue of winning the WAFU-UFOA Zone B with Williams getting on the scoresheet on two occasions during the tournament in Ghana last summer.
Williams admitted that they have to play to the coaches instructions to stand a chance of progressing to the knockout rounds of the U17 AFCON.
"Every nation that is in our group we respect them," Williams told reporters at the pre-match press conference.
"We are here to develop, to expose ourselves, so we cannot say that we are the favorites in the group because we have not yet played.
"We play to our coaches instructions, play as a team, attack as a team, defend as a team.
"At the end God will grant us a victory to put smile on our nation."
Nigeria and Zambia will do battle at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium, Constantine on Sunday evening.
