'Paul is fit' - Southampton boss confirms Onuachu should be available v Nottingham Forest
Published: May 05, 2023
Previewing the upcoming Premier League game between Nottingham Forest and Southampton at the City Ground, Saints boss Rubén Sellés confirmed that Paul Onuachu is in contention to be included in the traveling squad to Nottinghamshire.
Onuachu was missing from Southampton's matchday squad in back-to-back games against Bournemouth and Newcastle United, and it has come to light that the Super Eagles striker was omitted due to fitness issues.
Southampton had high hopes for the Nigeria international when they signed him from Racing Genk in the January transfer window but he's not yet up and running since his move to England with zero goals in nine games.
The FC Ebedei product scored goals for fun during his time with Racing Genk in Belgium - 85 in 134 appearances.
Providing a fitness update on his squad, Sellés told Southampton's official webpage : "Paul is fit. He came back to training a couple of days ago and as long as there are no issues in the next few days he will be available."
Onuachu has not started a league game for Southampton since the 1-0 loss to Leeds United at Elland Road on February 25.
The 28-year-old joined Southampton on a three-and-a-half-year deal for a transfer fee of 18 million euros and if bonuses are included, the fee could rise to 21 million euros.
