'We know what to do' - Confident South Africa U17 star sends message to Golden Eaglets
Published: May 06, 2023
Gomolemo Kekana's comments at Friday's pre-match press conference showed how confident he is that South Africa can get the job done in Saturday evening's Africa U17 Cup of Nations match against Nigeria at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium, Constantine.
With the Golden Eaglets only ahead by virtue of having a better goal difference, the Amajimbos midfielder knows that they must beat Nigeria to stand a chance of finishing second in Group B.
South Africa and Nigeria are guaranteed qualification to the quarterfinals if this evening's tie ends in a draw.
But Kekana, a player on the books of TS Galaxy, has underlined that South Africa are targeting nothing less than a win when they do battle with the most decorated U17 national team in the world with five titles won and three runners-up finishes.
"We are in the right state of mind. We are aware of what we have worked in training and we will work hard playing our own game to try get a win," Kekana told reporters.
"We know that the Nigeria team has a lot of quality and can switch up either play the ball on the ground or long, but we know what to do."
A lack of a potent striker is a concern for coach Nduka Ugbade going into the fixture with his side scoring just once in two matches at the U17 AFCON, while their opponents on Saturday have found the net three times.
