Fabrizio Romano reveals Bassey and Chelsea young star at the top of Brighton's wishlist
Published: July 12, 2023
Fabrizio Romano has provided an important update on Brighton & Hove's search for a left-sided central defender this summer.
The Italian transfer market specialist has suggested that Chelsea's European U21 Championship-winning defender Levi Colwill and Ajax Amsterdam star Calvin Bassey are at the top of Brighton's wishlist for the left-sided centre-back position.
The latest update from Romano has not confirmed which of the two players the Seagulls are prioritizing a move for.
Brighton's pursuit of Colwill is complicated as Chelsea have made it clear that the 20-year-old is not for sale and they also face competition from Liverpool for his services, so Bassey could be their most realistic option to fill the role as of now.
The Leicester City academy product drew interest from Brighton before his move to Ajax Amsterdam and he has remained on their radar since then.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "Chelsea consider Levi Colwill not for sale and crucial part of their project, so this is the position of Chelsea.
"There is strong interest from Brighton. He's in the list, top of the list Levi Colwill but together with Calvin Bassey."
Meanwhile, Bassey reported for pre-season training at Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday amid speculation linking him with a departure from the Eredivisie powerhouse, who made him the most expensive Nigerian defender in history when he joined from Glasgow Rangers last summer.
