Southampton boss confirms Super Eagles midfielder is in contention to make Championship debut
Published: August 03, 2023
Southampton manager Russell Martin has confirmed that Super Eagles midfielder, Joe Aribo is in contention to make his Championship debut when the Saints take on Sheffield Wednesday on Friday, August 4.
Aribo missed Southampton's final pre-season games against Bournemouth and AZ Alkmaar and is now set to be fit for his side's league opener.
Before his injury, he scored a goal in the Championship side's 4-2 win over Reading.
Speaking ahead of their first league game of the season, Martin confirmed the availability of the Nigerian midfielder as well as Stuart Armstrong and Jan Bednarek.
The Saints manager added that the return of the former Rangers midfielder and other players is a positive motivation for the team.
"Stuey [Armstrong] is back, Joe Aribo's back, Jan Bednarek's back, so that's really positive for us – three really good players and good characters who will help us, for sure" he told the club's official website.
Aribo joined the Saints last summer from Rangers but struggled for game time in the second half of the campaign.
He could only muster two goals in 28 all-competition appearances and was out of the matchday on some occasions.
The 27-year-old will, however, hope to impress his manager and revive his Saints career in the Championship in the coming season.
