'Should be fine' - Brentford coach expects Onyeka to be available for PL opener
Published: August 06, 2023
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has delivered a positive update on the injury suffered by Frank Onyeka during his side's final pre-season friendly against Lille on Saturday.
The Super Eagles midfielder was replaced just past the half-hour mark in the behind-closed-doors friendly at the Gtech Community Stadium.
It was feared that Onyeka would not be available for selection next weekend when the Bees begin their Premier League campaign against Tottenham Hotspur, but Frank expects the Nigerian to be involved in some capacity in a week's time.
Onyeka is not the only injury worry Brentford have from the goalless draw against Lille as Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo was also withdrawn before halftime due to a dead leg.
"We expect both players to be involved next Sunday," Frank said to Brentford's official website.
"Of course, we need to assess them over the next couple of days.
"It was a dead leg for Bryan, so that’s why we subbed him off early. We’re not taking any risks, and that was the same with Frank. They should be fine."
With the exception of the 1-1 draw versus Boreham Wood, Onyeka was involved in every single game played by Brentford in pre-season, starting three and coming off the bench once.
The FC Ebedei product struggled with injuries last season but still managed to make 21 appearances in the top-flight.
