Talented fullback Ogunneye makes his PL2 debut for Manchester United
Published: August 15, 2023
Two days after making his first appearance of the season in Manchester United U18s season opener against Middlesbrough, talented London-born fullback of Nigerian descent, Habeeb Ogunneye made his Premier League 2 debut for the Red Devils.
The 2005-born player came off the bench for the last nineteen minutes of United's 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace on Monday afternoon at Copers Cope.
Ogunneye was among five Nigeria-eligible players that featured in the game, with Maxi Oyedele and Shole Shoretire going the full ninety for Manchester United, while 2023 Flying Eagles invitee Ademola Ola-Adebomi and Franco Umeh lasted 78 and 61 minutes respectively for Crystal Palace.
Mateo Mejía scored from the spot to give the visitors the lead midway though the first half, and Jes Rak-Sakyi restored parity in first half stoppage time.
Noam Emeran thought he had snatched a point for United when he found the net to make it 2-2 in the 90th minute but Palace came away with all three points thanks to Jadan Raymond's game-winning strike in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
Ogunneye will be hoping his injury problems are a thing of the past, having struggled for fitness for most part of last season which limited his appearances to nine in the U18 Premier League.
The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract at Manchester United in November 2022.
