'Carney was playing in that position' - Pundit urges Chelsea to sign a No.10 after Chukwuemeka injury
Published: August 21, 2023
Sky Sports pundit Olivia Buzaglo believes Chelsea need to sign a new number 10 with the injury picked up by Carney Chukwuemeka in the defeat to West Ham United yesterday rather than signing another striker.
Chukwuemeka picked up a knee injury in the closing stages of the first half and was seen leaving the London Stadium on crutches.
The absence of the 19-year-old is a big blow for Mauricio Pochettino who has no natural number 10 in his team at the moment with Christopher Nkunku who can also play in that position out for a while due to injury.
Before yesterday's loss to West Ham, Chelsea were looking to sign another forward after Michael Olise turned down their advances rather than an attacking midfielder and have been linked with Arsenal striker with a Nigeria background Folarin Balogun.
Buzaglo has urged Chelsea to sign a new number 10 before the end of the transfer window instead of a striker due to injuries.
"To me what is glaring is that they need a number 10. Nkunku is injured, Carney who was playing in that position went off injured and left the London Stadium on crutches," she said on Sky Sports' Football Daily.
"You have got Ian Maatsen who could play there and maybe Enzo Fernandez can also push up to play there".
" I was just looking at the game yesterday and Chelsea didn't create any chance in the second half and that was the problem.
"Going into the last 10 days of the transfer window, a number 10 might be more important rather than a striker because you have got Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja who also has a part in the squad as well."
Chukwuemeka would have been left devastated after picking up an injury just after he got his first goal with a beautiful strike against the Hammers.
The extent of the injury of the Anglo-Nigerian midfielder is yet to be known but his absence could prove costly to the Blues.
