EFL Trophy: Olaofe on target, Shoretire scores in shootout to help Man Utd earn bonus point
Published: August 22, 2023
Manchester United U21 began their EFL Trophy campaign with a 5-3 win on penalties against League Two side Stockport County at Edgeley Park on Tuesday.
The Red Devils earned the bonus point after winning the shootout, with Anglo-Nigerian forward Shola Shoretire among the scorers for the visitors.
Joining Shoretire in Manchester United starting lineup were two other players of Nigerian descent in right-back Habeeb Ogunneye and central midfielder Maxi Oyedele, while Isaac Olaofe came off the bench for the Hatters with ten minutes of regulation time left.
After a goalless first half, United took the lead in the 63rd minute when Joe Hugill slotted in a rebound after goalkeeper Jordan Smith had saved the initial penalty.
The penalty was awarded after Akil Wright brought down Ethan Williams in the area.
In the eleventh minute of second half stoppage time, Stockport County were awarded a penalty after Ibou Toura was fouled by Harrison, and Olaofe confidently tucked away the resultant spot kick to level the game.
Shoretire dinked the ball down the middle to score United's second penalty, while Olaofe scored the Hatters fourth spot kick.
Manchester United's next EFL Trophy match against Bolton Wanderers is tentatively scheduled to hold on September 26.
