Legends match: Mikel shines playing as a defensive midfielder as Chelsea thrash Bayern 4-0
Published: September 09, 2023
Former Nigeria international Mikel Obi featured for Chelsea Legends in their 4-0 win over Bayern Munich Legends in a charity game played at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
Chelsea Legends coach Roberto Di Matteo named nine members of Chelsea's 2012 Champions League-winning squad in his starting lineup.
In a 4-3-3 formation, the former Super Eagles captain started at the base of midfield with Michael Essien and Jody Morris playing ahead of him, and he impressed, helping the Londoners to a clean sheet.
Former Ghanaian star Essien opened the scoring for the Blues from Ramires' cross in the 23rd minute.
John Terry doubled the lead of the two-time European champions from Florent Malouda's pass three minutes later.
Gary Cahill scored to make it 3-0 after an assist from Gianfranco Zola just before the hour mark and Tiago Mendes wrapped up the scoring in injury time for the Blues
Mikel played for the six-time English champions between 2006 and 2017, recording 372 appearances in all competitions.
He left Chelsea for Tianjin Jinmen Tiger, having won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice, and the Champions League and Europa League.
The match was held in honor of former Chelsea player and manager Gianluca Vialli, who passed away in January at the age of 58, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
