Three Super Eagles-eligible players benched as Pochettino enjoys his biggest win as Chelsea boss
Published: October 07, 2023
Chelsea made it three wins on the bounce in all competitions after thrashing Luca Koleosho's Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.
In terms of goals scored, today's victory was Mauricio Pochettino's biggest win since his appointment as Chelsea manager with effect from the 2023-2024 campaign.
The Blues, with the Argentine football tactician in the dugout, also won by an emphatic three-goal margin (3-0) against another Premier League newcomer Luton Town on August 25.
Pochettino made only one change to the starting lineup, a decision that saw three Super Eagles-eligible players in Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke named on the substitutes bench.
Pochettino opted against giving minutes to the aforementioned players of Nigerian descent despite his side coasting to victory.
Wilson Odobert became the youngest player to score a Premier League goal for Burnley when he broke the deadlock in the 15th minute but the visitors equalized through an unfortunate own goal from Ameen Al-Dakhil three minutes before halftime.
In a second half dominated by Chelsea, goals from Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson secured a comfortable win for the Blues.
France U21 coach Thierry Henry has selected Ugochukwu in his squad for the European Championship qualifiers with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus, while Madueke is also set to report for international duty early next week having been named in the England U21 squad.
Heading into the international break, Chelsea are 11th in the provisional Premier League table with eleven points from eight games.
