'A fabulous kid' - Getafe coach sings the praises of Uche ahead of possible Super Eagles debut
Published: May 23, 2025
Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas has hailed the impact of Christantus Uche following the midfielder's standout debut season in La Liga.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s season finale against Celta Vigo, Bordalas singled out the Nigerian for special praise, noting both his rapid rise and growing maturity on the pitch.
Uche has featured prominently for Getafe this season, racking up 37 appearances in all competitions with four goals and six assists.
The 22-year-old ranks among the most fouled players in La Liga—trailing only Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior and Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo.
"He's a fabulous kid, a boy who has a huge commitment, we have great affection for him," Bordalas told reporters, via Marca.
"All players go through a process; he reached professional football without going through those stages.
"Perhaps it was difficult for him at times, but we tried to help him. We're very grateful; he's been very important, like the rest of his teammates.
"I have a special affection for him; he was a risky bet, and we're very happy. We think he has room for improvement; he's very young."
Uche's impressive form for Getafe has not gone unnoticed at international level.
After being left out of Nigeria's squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe despite making the provisional list, he has now earned his first-ever senior call-up.
Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has named the midfielder in the squad for both the upcoming Unity Cup and a June international friendly against Russia.
Barring injury, Uche is set to make his senior debut for Nigeria in the coming days, capping off what has been a breakthrough campaign in Spain.
