Dual-national Arsenal striker eligible for Nigeria becomes provisionally cap-tied to Denmark

Highly-rated Arsenal striker Chido Obi became provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth, Denmark on Wednesday, October 11, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

 

The 2007-born player is eligible to represent Nigeria through his father and Denmark, where he was born and raised.

 

Obi was named in the starting lineup as Denmark defeated Lithuania 4-1 in a 2024 European U17 Championship qualifier at the Tskaltubo Technical Center, Tsqaltubo - his first competitive game for the youth teams of Scandinavian nation.

 

Prior to today's game, the 15-year-old had represented Denmark U16 and U17 teams in friendly matches and played two games for England U16s.

 

Despite being provisionally cap-tied to Denmark, Obi's options at international level is still open but he has to apply for a change of association which must be approved by Fifa before he can play for the Nigeria national teams in the future. 

 

Seventeen minutes into the contest, Obi scored to give Denmark a 2-1 lead, taking his tally to six goals in seven appearances for the U17 national team.

 

Obi has shown this season he is one for the future, scoring three goals in four matches for Arsenal in the U18 Premier League.

 

Nine players named in the latest Super Eagles squad for the friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique - Tyronne Ebuehi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Jordan Torunarigha, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru - all had other options but chose to represent the three-time African champions.
