Intercepted pass or Mudryk's lob: Onuoha reveals the bigger mistake Arsenal GK made v Chelsea
Published: October 23, 2023
Nigerian-born former Manchester City central defender Nedum Onuoha reckons that David Raya will remain in between the sticks as Arsenal goalkeeper despite his howlers in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Signed from Brentford on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window with an option to buy included in the deal, the Spanish glovesman has usurped the popular England international Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal's first choice goalkeeper due to his distribution.
Raya looked panicky every time the ball was at his feet during the Premier League clash against Chelsea as Arsenal tried to play it out from the back.
His error gifted Chelsea their second goal when he was caught out by a lob from Mykhailo Mudryk in the 48th minute.
Raya almost gifted Chelsea a third goal when his wayward pass was intercepted by Cole Palmer but the England U21 international was unable to put the ball into the back of the net.
Onuoha reckons that the bigger mistake the Spaniard made was his blunder that led to Mudryk's goal.
Speaking on Arsenal's goalie situation, Onuoha said on ESPN FC, Onuoha said: "I think as the watching public one thing we need to accept is that the way in which these goalkeepers are playing now, he's here to stay.
"The issue really, sometimes we consider it to be execution and intent, but the managers they want the intent but they've got an issue with the execution.
"As long as the people continue to do the right thing according to what the manager wants, even though it seems like a risky pass from our perspective, then they'll keep doing it.
"He has gone with Raya because Raya is comfortable enough to attempt the pass, I think his execution will improve and for me the bigger mistake is that one that led to the Mudryk goal, but those things in terms of passes being caught out, managers want their goalkeeper to play like this."
In seven appearances for Arsenal, the Brentford loanee has kept four clean sheets and conceded six goals.
