'It made sense to take him off' - Tottenham coach reveals why Udogie didn't complete the game v Fulham
Published: October 24, 2023
Manager Ange Postecoglou has played down injury worries for Destiny Udogie who was substituted before the hour mark in Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 triumph over Fulham on Monday night.
The 20-year-old was substituted in the 55th minute and was replaced by Emerson Royal with Tottenham having established a two-goal lead.
The talented full-back was actively in the game before his substitution, bumping up and down the left flank, and recording 56 touches before Postecoglou decided to take him off with more than half of hour to the end of the encounter.
The Australian tactician after the encounter gave an update on the fitness of the Italian-Nigerian defender.
In quotes relayed by Metro, Postecoglou:"Destiny just felt a bit of tiredness at half-time.
'We said we'd give it 10, 15 minutes. Again, short turnaround, once we got the second goal it made sense to take him off.'
Udogie played for a combined 74 minutes for Italy in their UEFA European Championship qualifiers against Malta and England respectively during the last international break and that might have affected his fitness.
He should be able to get back to full fitness before Tottenham's encounter with Crystal Palace on matchday 10 of the Premier League on Friday.
