West Brom defender Ajayi joins Osimhen, Chukwueze on the list of injured Super Eagles players ahead of WCQ
Published: October 25, 2023Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro has suffered another injury blow ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in November.
West Brom defender SemI Ajayi has become the latest Super Eagles player to fall injured, after Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze.
2015 Fifa U17 World Cup winners Osimhen and Chukwueze are all but ruled out of the World Cup qualifiers, with the Italian-based duo recovering from hamstring injuries.
West Brom have not put a timeframe on Ajayi's return to action but informed that the center back has suffered a relapse of an ankle injury, which kept him out of the starting lineup in three consecutive matches before the international break.
Because of the same issue that has cropped up, the Super Eagles star was unavailable for selection on Tuesday as West Brom beat Queens Park Rangers 2-0 in the Championship.
Providing a fitness update on his squad after last night's game, Baggies boss Carlos Corberán told the club's official website: "Semi Ajayi, when he was playing in the last ten minutes of the Plymouth game, he turned his ankle.
"He suffered the same injury as he had before the international break."
Ajayi went the distance in Nigeria's 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia in a friendly in Portugal on October 13 but was not given minutes in the next game against Mozambique.
