Official: Chelsea academy product Chibueze joins Sunderland after release by Leicester City
Published: November 02, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Chelsea academy product Kelechi Chibueze.
Chibueze has been offered a deal by the Black Cats following a successful trial.
The 19-year-old had been on the lookout for a new employer after he was released by Leicester City at the end of the 2022-2023 campaign, upon the expiry of his contract.
Chibueze has signed a contract that will keep him at Sunderland until June 30, 2024 with an option for a further season.
The promising goalkeeper will start his Sunderland career with the development squad but is eligible to be fielded for Championship games if the need arises.
He will be aiming to make his debut in the Premier League 2 after he was an unused substitute in nine games during his time at the King Power Stadium.
Chibueze spent a decade at boyhood club Chelsea before departing the Blues for Leicester City, where he signed his first professional contract.
A former England U16 international, Chibueze registered nineteen career appearances in the U18 Premier League, with one in the colours of Chelsea and the others for the Foxes.
