'He's feeling good' - Boavista coach confirms Super Eagles left-back Onyemaechi has returned to training
Published: November 04, 2023
Speaking at a press conference before his side's trip to Rio Ave, Boavista manager Petit confirmed that Bruno Onyemaechi has returned to training, which puts him in contention to be involved in some capacity on Sunday evening.
The Super Eagles left-back sat out Boavista's clash with Sporting CP in the last round of matches after complaining of a muscle problem in the hours before the game.
Onyemaechi was spotted training with his Boavista teammates during the week and Petit has confirmed that the defender's physical problems are behind him.
The 24-year-old has established himself as a key player in the Boavista team, making seven starts from a possible nine in the Portuguese top flight this term.
Petit will observe Onyemaechi at close quarters on Sunday before deciding whether to include him in the gameday squad or leave him out.
In quotes relayed by Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Petit said: "Bruno has already worked with us. Tomorrow we still have one more training session, but he's feeling good".
The update from Petit will be sweet music to the ears of Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro who is facing an injury crisis for the back-to-back 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, with up to six players currently rated as doubtful or ruled out entirely.
Peseiro is sweating on the fitness of Italian-based duo Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, West Brom central defender Semi Ajayi and Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi before his squad announcement.
Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is not available for selection due to a muscle injury.
