PL2: Manchester United U21s captain Shoretire scores and assists against his former club
Published: December 16, 2023
Shola Shoretire is unlikely to be given minutes on Sunday evening when Manchester United face off with Liverpool in a blockbuster Premier League match at Anfield, considering the fact that the Anglo-Nigerian attacking midfielder was on U21 duties on Saturday.
United U21s boss Travis Binnion made four changes for the visit of Newcastle United in a Premier League 2 clash at Carrington Training Center, one of which saw Anglo-Polish-Nigerian defensive midfielder Maxi Oyedele come into the starting lineup.
Shoretire, wearing the captain's armband for the umpteenth time this season, put in another impressive shift as United beat his former club Newcastle United 3-2.
James Nolan broke the deadlock within the opening minute after Shoretire's first touch fell kindly into the path of the defender, but the Magpies responded almost immediately as they restored parity with a close range header from James Huntley.
In-form striker Joe Hugill converted a penalty to restore the Red Devils' one-goal lead at minute 16 but Newcastle United equalized again as Dylan Stephenson slotted home after Josh Scott' whipped in a dangerous cross from the left hand side five minutes after the restart.
Manchester United responded well after conceding and scored a winner through Shoretire who made no mistake with the finish after Mateo Mejia found him with a cutback in the 58th minute.
Shoretire has now directly participated in 11 goals (7 goals, 4 assists) in eleven appearances for Manchester United U21s so far this season.
