What is Super Eagles year-end world rankings? Fifa reveal position of three-time African champions
Published: December 21, 2023
Through their official website, FIFA on Thursday, December 21, have released its end-of-the-year ranking of national teams.
The ranking had Nigeria in 42nd position which meant they are unchanged from the last grading which was released last month.
This comes as no surprise as Nigeria didn't feature in any game from the last time FIFA published its last ranking.
However, the position of the three-time African champions is highly likely to change after the African Cup of Nations next month where they have been placed in Group A alongside Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
José Peseiro's side are the highest-ranked team in the group with Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau sitting in 49th, 88th and 103rd positions respectively
Nigeria will kick start their AFCON campaign with a match against Equatorial Guinea, before facing the host Ivory Coast and rounding up the group stage with a game against the Djurtus.
Should they move to the latter stages of the competition, they would move high up the ladder when FIFA releases its ranking and a poor outing could see them move down the pecking order yet again.
Historically, Nigeria's highest position in the placement is 5th which they attained in April 1994.
