Iroegbunam makes first PL appearance in 605 days as Man Utd win 5-goal thriller against Aston Villa
Published: December 27, 2023
Anglo-Nigerian midfielder Tim Iroegbunam featured for Aston Villa in their 3-2 loss to Manchester United in a Premier League fixture played at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
It was his first appearance in the Premier League in 605 days as he last featured for the Lions versus Norwich City on April 30, 2022 before the Boxing Day clash with the Red Devils.
John McGinn's free-kick gave Aston Villa the lead in the 21st minute before Leander Dendoncker doubled the advantage with an unstoppable shot five minutes later.
Three minutes after the start of the second half Alejandro Garnacho thought he had reduced the deficit for the home side but his goal was ruled out by the VAR due to the offside in the build-up
The Argentine would eventually pull one back for Manchester United in the 59th minute with a precise shot inside the box.
He grabbed the equaliser in the 71st minute with a deflected shot and Rasmus Hojlund got the winning goal, eight minutes before the stoppage time.
With Aston Villa running out of legs in the middle of the park, Iroegbunam was brought on in the 86th minute to replace Dendoncker which marked his first appearance in the Premier League this season.
The 20-year-old could manage just 7 touches of the ball, registered 6 passes, and made three ground tackles of which he won 1, committed one foul and also won one for Unai Emery's side.
