Chelsea and Leicester interested in signing 2023 U17 World Cup winner of Nigerian descent
Published: January 02, 2024
Chelsea and Leicester City are pursuing a deal for VfL Wolfsburg and Germany youth international of Nigerian descent David Odogu.
According to German transfer market expert Florian Plettenberg, the two English clubs have spoken with the centre back but talks are still at the initial stage.
Odogu is said to be open to leaving Wolfsburg this month and his agent has sounded out more clubs about his availability.
The talented defender was a member of the Germany team that won the FIFA U17 World Cup last year and he featured in all matches played and recorded one assist.
The 17-year-old started his career in the youth system of Steglitzer SC Südwest before he moved to Union Berlin where he played for a year.
He joined Wolfsburg in 2020 and currently plays for the club's U19s and has made eleven appearances across all competitions this season.
He was named in the White and Greens Bundesliga matchday squad last season in their 3-0 win over Mainz O5 but was an unused substitute in the encounter.
Odogu is a right-footed center-back but can also play on the other side of the central defense and has been likened to former Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger for his physicality, pace, and good tackling ability.
