Confirmed: Chelsea loan out African striker to Premier League rivals
Published: January 13, 2024
With a statement on their official website, Chelsea have confirmed that Ivory Coast international striker David Fofana has joined Premier League side Burnley on loan until the end of the season.
Fofana spent the first half of the season on loan at German Bundesliga club Union Berlin, where he made seventeen appearances in all competitions including four in the UEFA Champions League.
The 21-year-old's loan deal at Union Berlin was canceled five months before its expiration, paving the way for him to complete his move to the Clarets.
Sevilla were also interested in signing Fofana but Chelsea felt it was better for him to continue his development with a Premier League team.
The Ivorian arrived at Chelsea in January 2023 from Norwegian club Molde where he scored 24 goals in 65 matches.
After twenty-one games, Burnley sit 19th in the Premier League table with 12 points, four less than Everton.
Fofana will try to solve the offensive problems of Burnley who have the second worst attack in the English top-flight with 21 goals scored,
Subject to Premier League and FA approval, the Ouragahio native will be available for Burnley’s next game - a trip to Manchester City on January 31st.
