Goalkeeper Union: Equatorial Guinea star Owono labels Super Eagles No. 1 Uzoho a great GK
Published: January 13, 2024
Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Jesús Owono has hailed Francis Uzoho ahead of tomorrow's Africa Cup of Nations opener between the Super Eagles and Nzalang Nacional.
The Omonia Nicosia shot-stopper has come under huge scrutiny for his uninspiring performances and that has put his position under threat.
The 25-year-old first-choice position is now being threatened by Chippa United star Stanley Nwabili who was recently handed an invitation to the Super Eagles ahead of the start of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Owono has jumped to the defence of Uzoho, labeling the Super Eagles number 1 'a great goalkeeper'.
The Deportivo Alavés ace told reporters at the pre-match press conference:"Nigeria has got great goalkeepers, my goalkeeper trainer who has worked with Uzoho told me he is a great goalkeeper."
Unlike the Nigerian shot-stopper, Owono is the undisputed first choice for the National Thunder and is certain to start in goal bar any last-minute change.
He has 23 caps under his belt for the Central African nation and has kept thirteen clean sheets.
Uzoho will also be hoping he starts in goal in tomorrow's encounter as he seeks to participate at AFCON for the third time in his career.
