'Not dozy' - West Brom's record scorer sings the praises of Southampton's N15b signing from Man City Edozie
Published: February 17, 2024
West Brom's all-time leading goalscorer, Tony 'Bomber' Brown was left impressed by the performance of England youth teamer of Nigeria descent Samuel Edozie during Southampton's impressive 2-0 road win over West Brom in a Championship clash on Friday night.
Edozie ended his association with Manchester City after signing a multi-year contract with the Saints in the hours leading up to the close of the summer transfer window in 2022.
The Saints reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign the precocious winger in exchange for eight million pounds (approximately N15 billion in Nigerian currency) - a decent fee for the then teenager taking into account he had played just one game as a professional before his move to the St Mary's Stadium.
Former Southampton Head of Senor Recruitment, Joe Shields, who worked behind the scenes to make Joe Aribo's transfer to Southampton a reality, also played a key role in the Saints winning the race for the signature of Edozie.
Edozie is having a breakout season at Southampton, having directly participated in nine goals in twenty-two appearances in the Championship.
Tony Brown has been keeping tabs on Edozie and is impressed with what he has seen from the Super Eagles-eligible player.
"Sam Edozie: £8m signing from Manchester City," he said on on BBC WM 95.6.
"Six goals already this season, only 20 years of age, left winger, I've seen a bit of this lad and like what I see - definitely not dozy."
Against the Baggies, Edozie provided the assist for Southampton's second goal netted by David Brooks in the 73rd minute.
Joe Aribo in his first game after AFCON duty with the Super Eagles hopped off the bench in the 58th minute while international teammate Semi Ajayi was an unused substitute.
