Deborah Abiodun reacts: Super Falcons to face Bayana Bayana in final phase of Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers
Published: February 27, 2024
The Super Falcons will face South Africa's Bayana Bayana in the fourth round of qualifiers for the 2024 CAF Women's Olympic qualifying tournament.
South Africa thrashed Tanzania 4-0 over two legs to set up a meeting with fierce rivals Nigeria in the final round of qualifiers scheduled to hold in April.
Randy Waldrum's side have played four games in the Olympic qualifiers and have been defensively solid just as they were at the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup, having posted three consecutive clean sheets.
Pittsburgh Panthers midfielder Deborah Abiodun was arguably the standout player in Nigeria's hard-fought 1-0 win over Cameroon in the third round of the Olympic qualifiers.
The 20-year-old won several balls in midfield and matched the physicality of the Indomitable Lionesses..
At the post-match press conference, Abiodun was questioned about a potential meeting with the African champions as everything indicated that they would progress to the fourth round given their comfortable 3-0 win over Tanzania in the first leg.
Abiodun told reporters: "We'll not take our opponents for granted. We'd follow our coach's instructions and follow how he wants us to play.
"I'm sure by God's grace and with the support of every Nigerian out there we we would overcome South Africa.
"Of course they are a strong side, every team is strong. Football is developing in every country so we're not underrating anybody. We hope to qualify against South Africa."
It has been sixteen years since the Super Falcons qualified for the Olympic Games and a victory against South Africa books their ticket to Paris 2024.
