U20 Afcon: Flying Eagles face key test against Thabang Mahlangu, two other South Africans in semifinal
Published: May 14, 2025
As Nigeria's Flying Eagles gear up for a high-stakes semi-final clash against South Africa at the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, three standout South African players pose a significant threat to the West Africans’ hopes of reaching the final.
Thabang Mahlangu is arguably the most dangerous weapon in South Africa’s arsenal.
The forward has scored three goals so far in the tournament, including the crucial winner in the quarter-final against DR Congo.
A fourth strike would see him become the first South African to score four goals at the U-20 finals since Luther Singh in 2017.
Mahlangu’s positioning, instinctive finishing, and ability to create chances in tight spaces will demand close attention from Nigeria’s backline, which has already conceded only twice in four matches.
In midfield, Shakeel April has emerged as a vital creative force. With one goal and two assists, he leads South Africa in goal involvements at the tournament, an hnonour he shares with Mahlangu.
His assist for Mahlangu’s winner against DR Congo showcased his vision and passing range.
Nigeria’s midfield trio must limit April’s time on the ball to prevent him from dictating the tempo and unlocking their solid defensive shape.
Fletcher Lowe, South Africa’s goalkeeper, has been in exceptional form.
With 19 saves—more than any other keeper in the competition—Lowe has been instrumental in South Africa’s progression.
His reflexes and shot-stopping ability, especially under pressure, helped secure two clean sheets and their first-ever knockout win in open play.
Nigeria, who have scored just three goals in four matches, must find a way past Lowe if they are to end their semi-final drought.
The Flying Eagles, who are aiming for a record-extending 10th final appearance, will need to be at their best to overcome a South African side unbeaten in their last four matches.
Shutting down Mahlangu, containing April’s creativity, and finding a way past Lowe will be crucial if Nigeria is to book their place in the final of Egypt 2025.
