'Very unlikely' - Transfer guru David Ornstein cast doubt over Chelsea pulling off deal for Osimhen
Published: March 08, 2024
Transfer market specialist David Ornstein has ruled out the possibility of Chelsea signing Victor Osimhen as they risk breaching the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.
It is no news that the Stamford Bridge outfit are one of the frontrunners for the signing of the Super Eagles forward but Ornstein's latest revelation might have thrown a spanner in the wheel of their plan to sign him.
The Blues had spent €1.06bn in the last three transfer windows and will have to balance the books if they are to make a marquee signing like Osimhen.
Speaking to the Athletic via The Chelsea Chronicle, Ornstein revealed that the two-time European champions will have to be careful with their finances and suggested that they are out of the race to sign the Napoli star.
"Chelsea, like many clubs, are tight on PSR and therefore will need to cut their cloth accordingly. Today's financial results showed that but everything I hear suggests they fully expect to remain compliant and will do what it takes to ensure that," Ornstein said.
"It means that when we hear talk of someone like Osimhen being signed this summer, I think that is very unlikely – owing to the transfer fee and salary."
The transfer guru's latest revelation also lays credence to our earlier report which stated that the London-based club will need to sell players if they want to sign Osimhen in the next transfer window.
Even if they do manage to get some players off their books, it remains to be seen whether they will be willing to sanction a transfer deal close to €130m which is the Nigeria international's release clause.
