Why is Victor Osimhen on the bench against Inter? Napoli coach offers explanation
Published: March 17, 2024
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen's participation in their blockbuster Serie A clash against Inter Milan was cast into doubt after manager Francisco Calzona opted to start him on the bench.
Speaking to DAZN via Football ltalia before kickoff, Calzona revealed Osimhen is battling with a previous injury.
While the Nigerian forward is included as a substitute, his availability for the rest of the match remains uncertain.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year has been a vital figure for the Parthenopeans this season, and his presence on the pitch would have posed a major threat to Inter's defense.
Inter Milan, meanwhile, will be looking to exploit Osimhen's limited mobility as they aim to solidify their lead in the Serie A title race.
"Osimhen has an inflammation of the scar from an old injury," Calzona told DAZN.
"He is on the bench and we'll see, if necessary, if we are able to use him today."
The 25-year-old's potential absence would mean that the team's gaffer would have to rely on other options he has at his disposal, specifically in the form of Giovanni Simeone and Giacomo Raspadori whilst making sure to play the safe card by not risking to field him if he appears to be uncomfortable at any point in time.
Osimhen has been a driving force for the Partenopei this season, having notched 13 goals across all competitions.
