Tanimu reveals what Finidi told him after Super Eagles debut against Ghana, shares conversation with Iwobi
Published: March 26, 2024Super Eagles debutant Benjamin Tanimu has shed light on the encouragement he received from coach George Finidi following his impressive debut against Ghana in Marrakesh, Morocco on Friday, March 22.
Nigeria's victory over Ghana marked a significant milestone, being their first win against the Black Stars since 2006.
The match saw the Super Eagles assert their dominance with goals from Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman, securing a 2-1 win despite Jordan Ayew's penalty for Ghana.
Under the guidance of Finidi George, Nigeria employed a 3-5-2 formation, with Tanimu stepping up to fill the void left by the injured Kenneth Omeruo, marking his debut for the national team.
Tanimu showcased his defensive prowess before being substituted in the 79th minute due to injury, making way for Ademola Lookman.
In a video shared on X , Tanimu reflected on his debut experience, emphasizing his determination to perform to the best of his abilities.
He expressed his mindset going into the game, stating, "My mind was just focused on playing my game and ensuring no attacker could get past me."
Following the match, Tanimu revealed the words of encouragement he received from coach Finidi George, highlighting the significance of his debut in the national team setup.
"He came to me and offered some encouraging words, acknowledging the challenge of representing Nigeria for the first time at the senior level.
"He urged me to continue playing my game and strive for improvement," Tanimu recounted.
Moreover, Tanimu shared a conversation he had with experienced midfielder Alex Iwobi after making his debut, expressing admiration for Iwobi's playing style.
"I chatted few words with Iwobi. I've always admired his style of play because he's a creative midfielder so I love that," Tanimu remarked.
