'Can happen with Kelechi' - Leicester City boss defends club legend Vardy after missed chances
Published: March 30, 2024Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca leapt to the defence of club legend Jamie Vardy after his missed chances during the Foxes 1-0 defeat to Bristol City in a Championship game at Ashton Gate on Good Friday.
The Nigerian international entered the game as a substitute for Vardy with sixteen minutes remaining on the clock as Leicester City sought an equalizer.
In their first game since the last international break of the season, a goal from Anis Mehmeti with just over a quarter of an hour to play condemned Leicester City to defeat.
Vardy squandered several chances to break the deadlock before Mehmeti's game-winning strike.
In the 31st minute, the experienced center forward sent his shot narrowly wide of the far post after racing onto Mavididi's through ball and seven minutes before halftime he came close again but saw his shot go wide.
Four minutes into the second half, Robins goalkeeper O'Leary made a save with his legs to deny Vardy from opening the scoring and the Foxes number 9 was denied from close range at minute 63.
Asked if he was surprised that Vardy missed his chances, Maresca was quoted as saying by LeicestershireLive: "This shows it’s football. It can happen with Jamie, can happen with Daka, Kele, Cannon.
"It can happen. Jamie has scored so many goals with this club in his life. Today probably he could score some goals. Unfortunately it happened today.
"Every game is important. But we created four or five clear chances.”
Leicester City's poor run of form with four losses in six game means they have slipped out of the automatic promotion places with eight games left to be played.
