'He was the worst' - Pundit tears into Napoli striker Osimhen despite scoring against Frosinone
Published: April 16, 2024Italian journalist Gianluca Gifuni was disappointed with the performance of Victor Osimhen during Napoli's clash with Frosinone at the Diego Maradona Stadium this past weekend.
Napoli missed the chance to leapfrog Atalanta in the Serie A standings after they were held to a 2-2 draw by strugglers Frosinone.
After Walid Cheddira's equalizer in the 50th minute, Osimhen steered the ball home from close range following a shot by Kvaratskhelia at minute 63 to make it 2-1 but the visitors salvaged a point thanks to their Morocco international.
The Nigeria international had a chance to break the deadlock in the 14th minute but fired straight at the goalkeeper from close range and could have doubled Napoli's advantage in the 28th minute when he was 1v1 with Stefano Turati, only to see his effort miss the target.
Those misses by Osimhen proved costly as Cheddira equalized for the Yellow and Blues for the second time with seventeen minutes left on the clock.
Gianluca Gifuni has insisted that the reigning African Footballer of the Year should be blamed for Napoli failing to secure the three points, citing his missed opportunities, particularly in the first half.
In quotes relayed by Area Napoli, he said on Televomero: "Maradona's match could have ended 6-3 for the Azzurri.
"However, I don't think I have heard any criticism towards Osimhen , the Nigerian's mistakes in front of goal are worth as much as those made by Rrahmani in defense if not more.
"He should be the driving force and help the team, but he misses trivial goals in front of the goalkeeper.
"If he isn't there, everyone is bad, but he was the worst. Calzona puts the team on the pitch well, but what's missing is everything else."
Osimhen has mustered 15 goals in 27 all-competition appearances for Napoli so far this season.
