Chelsea loanee Anjorin helps Portsmouth clinch League One title with two games to spare
Published: April 17, 2024Chelsea-owned midfielder Faustino Anjorin helped Portsmouth clinch the League One title with two games to spare after a dramatic 3-2 win over Barnsley at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.
The former England youth international of Nigerian descent was loaned out to Pompey last August but has seen his game time limited due to fitness issues.
Against Barnsley, the Anglo-Nigerian was named in the starting lineup for the first time since the FA Cup defeat to Chesterfield in November, taking his total appearances to twelve in a Pompey shirt.
After the visitors opened the scoring in the sixth minute, Anjorin was involved in the build-up to Portsmouth's equalizer three minutes later when his pass deflected into the path of Kusini Yengi, who smashed the ball home from close range.
Anjorin came close to scoring his third of the season in the 11th minute, only for his effort to go inches wide of the target.
The 22-year-old made way for Callum Lang before the start of the second half.
John McAtee's 59th minute strike was canceled out by Colby Bishop with seven minutes left, before Conor Shaughnessy headed home a corner for the match-winning goal in the 89th minute.
Anjorin has not figured for parent club Chelsea since February 2021 when he played against Barnsley in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
The academy product will enter the last one year of his contract with Chelsea on July 1, 2024.
