'Stopped by our own police' - Rwanda coach raises concerns over poor treatment of Wasps before Nigeria match
Published: September 10, 2024
Rwanda manager Torsten Frank Spittler has expressed his dissatisfaction with the poor conditions his team faced before Tuesday afternoon's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria at Stade Amahoro in Kigali.
The Wasps have enjoyed a rich vein of form since the appointment of the German last November, winning three of their last seven matches and started their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with an impressive 1-1 draw versus Libya in Tripoli.
They are aiming to build on their recent performances when they battle three-time African champions Nigeria this afternoon.
However, Spittler has suggested that some Rwandans are deliberately making things difficult for him because they want to see him fail.
The former Germany U16 assistant coach revealed that Sunday's training session started late because they were delayed by the Rwandan Police.
Speaking at his press briefing on the eve of the meeting with the Super Eagles, Torsten Frank Spittler told reporters: "We have a very difficult match coming up and we are even creating our own problems here in the country.
"Yesterday we were not allowed to go to the training pitch, stopped by our own police, coming late to the field 30 minutes.
"We had to carry equipment for several hundred meters because we couldn't park near to the field.
"The responsible guy is getting some information from his boss for the future that the coming national coach for the Amavubi will have it a little bit easier than I have it here at the moment."
The Super Eagles did not train on Sunday upon their arrival in Kigali but had a feel of the Stade Amahoro pitch on Monday afternoon.
Against Rwanda, the Super Eagles are aiming to win two consecutive matches for the first time since February 2024.
