Racing Genk chief reveals he made an attempt to sign Southampton striker Onuachu in the summer
Published: September 12, 2024
KRC Genk head of football Dimitri de Condé has revealed that he attempted to resign Paul Onuachu this summer but the lanky striker rejected the opportunity to return to the club.
Onuachu was one of Genk's best players before his departure. He departed for Southampton, registering 85 goals and 10 assists in 134 appearances across all competitions.
He won one trophy and scooped the Belgian Golden Shoe, Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year and Ebony Shoe on one occasion apiece.
The 30-year-old has been unable to replicate the level of success he recorded with the Jupiler Pro League Club and struggled with Southampton, though he did well on loan with Trabzonspor last season.
De Condé has revealed that Genk approached the Nigerian striker on the possibility of a return but he turned down the opportunity to do so and refuted the report on trying to resign another former player of the club, Mike Trésor
In quotes relayed by Voetbal Primeur via Sport Witness, he said. "Not Trésor, I have had contact with Paul several times. Those were good conversations, but I also had them with him last year.
"Where Paul actually said, 'Genk is home for me, and it will remain that way. One day I will come home. But at the moment I want to continue tasting abroad.' In the end, we were not really able to talk about a transfer."
Onuachu is on the radar of Trabzonspor, and he is said to be keen on moving to the club, having excelled with the Turkish side last term, but a difference in valuation is hindering his chance of spending another season with the Turkish giants.
Süper Lig newcomers Göztepe have also been credited with an interest in the lanky forward.
