Super Eagles striker Onuachu among ten Nigerian players named in Southampton's Premier League squad
Published: September 14, 2024
Southampton have submitted their squad list to the Premier League following the conclusion of the summer transfer window.
For the first part of the 2024-2025 Premier League season, Saints manager Russell Martin can call upon the services of ten players eligible to represent the Nigerian national teams.
The big news is that Super Eagles attacker Paul Onuachu has been surprisingly included on the 25-main list after failing to seal a move to a European club before the close of the summer transfer window.
The FC Ebedei product attracted concrete interest from Turkish Super Lig outfit Trabzonspor but they were priced out of a move, with Southampton valuing the lanky forward at fifteen million euros.
Onuachu has not figured for Southampton since playing against Gillingham FC in the second round of the Carabao Cup in August 2023 amid speculation over his future at the St Mary's Stadium.
Fellow Nigeria international Joe Aribo is among seventeen homegrown players in Southampton's 25-man Premier League squad.
The versatile midfielder is surely in the plans of the Southampton head coach, having started each of the three games played in the new Premier League season.
Russell Martin has supplemented the Southampton squad with eight players eligible to represent Nigeria internationally.
Derrick Abu, Romeo Akachukwu, Princewill Ehibhatiomhan, Khiani Ofuyaekpone-Shombe, Olasubomi Okunola-Matthews, Adetokunbo Oyekunle, Lesley Ugochukwu and Leo Umeh have been included as U21 players (contract and scholars).
Aribo and Ugochukwu have been named in the matchday squad for the lunchtime kickoff against Manchester United.
