Barcelona pull the plug on signing Chelsea midfielder Chukwuemeka in January
Published: October 15, 2024
According to Sport, Hansi Flick has pulled the plug on Barcelona's intended move for Anglo-Nigerian midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka in the winter transfer market.
Barcelona director Deco had intended on signing another midfielder in the winter transfer window and wanted to bring Chukwuemeka to the club.
The Spanish giants were linked with the England youth international last summer but couldn't make a deal happen and wanted to reignite their interest in him but that move is unlikely to happen when the transfer window reopens for business in January.
Barcelona's German tactician is said to be satisfied with his midfield options, which consist of Spain international Pedri and Gavi, Frankie De Jong, Fermín Lopez, Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó, while defenders Erik Garcia and Andreas Christensen can also play there.
Chukwuemeka has made one appearance across all competitions for Chelsea this season and is not in the plans of the manager, Enzo Maresca, who revealed in the summer that he has to leave the club to play regularly.
Besides Barcelona, AC Milan also made an approach to sign him in the last transfer window but Chelsea didn't want him to join the Rossoneri because of the possibility of not getting enough game time.
Blues insider Simon Phillips has reported that AC Milan still retain an interest in the 20-year-old and have contacted his representative over a possible move.
