Ex-Premier League referee insists Southampton deserved a penalty for Ayew's pull on Onuachu's shirt
Published: October 22, 2024
Former referee Dermot Gallagher has weighed in on the contentious moment involving Jordan Ayew and Paul Onuachu during the second half of Leicester City's 3-2 victory over Southampton.
In that critical moment, Ayew pulled Onuachu's shirt while he was breaking free on goal at St. Mary's Stadium.
Despite protests from Southampton players, referee Anthony Taylor did not award a penalty, a decision that frustrated the Saints.
Minutes later, Leicester equalized thanks to Jamie Vardy, while Ryan Fraser received a red card for pulling the shirt of the former England international.
In response to these decisions, Dermot Gallagher expressed his disagreement with the referee's call.
Gallagher, analyzing the play, stated, "I thought it was a penalty. If you hold a player's shirt for five steps, which he does, that's sustained. They were of the opinion the goalkeeper would have got the ball anyhow," he told Sky Sports.
The match saw Southampton take an early lead with goals from Cameron Archer and Joe Aribo.
However, Leicester City fought back in the second half, equalizing through strikes from Buonanotte and Jamie Vardy before Ayew scored the winner.
Onuachu was brought on in the second half minute to bolster Southampton's attack but failed to make an impact.
Since returning from a successful loan spell at Trabzonspor, the former Racing Genk goal poacher has struggled with his form and will be looking for more chances to showcase himself.
