Former Spartak defender on Russia v Nigeria clash: Osimhen didn't come but expect goals

Former Spartak Moscow defender Eduard Mor has shared his thoughts on Friday evening's friendly between the Russian national team and Nigeria, highlighting the absence of one of the Super Eagles' biggest stars while warning that the match could still turn into a goal fest.

Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle will be without the services of prolific Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, who netted an impressive 42 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions for club and country during the 2024–25 season.

With a transfer likely on the horizon this summer following a demanding season, Osimhen was deliberately omitted from Nigeria's international fixtures in May and June to minimize the risk of injury ahead of a potential move.

Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Iheanacho, Nathan Tella and Umar Sadiq will also miss the friendly in Moscow due to personal reasons or injuries.

"It's a pity that the leading footballer of the Nigerian national team, Osimhen, didn't come. Then several people from those whom everyone knows refused," Mor told Championat.

Despite the absence of key players like Victor Osimhen, Mor believes Nigeria still poses a serious threat in attack.

Belgian Pro League Golden Boot winner Tolu Arokodare and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface are set to add to their international caps, having traveled with the squad to Russia.

"But at the same time, they are stronger in attack than all the opponents we have played. But in terms of defense, I don't think they will try very hard not to concede," Mor added.

According to the ex-Spartak defender, Russia should still have the upper hand — particularly with Nigeria’s defensive frailties.

"Therefore, the Russian national team will score more and win. The match will be very goal-oriented.

"At the very least, they will create problems for us. The Nigerians can very well score," Mor concluded.
