'It's not easy to play for Nigeria' – Olusegun reacts after impressive debut against Russia
Published: June 07, 2025
Krasnodar forward Olakunle Olusegun has expressed his pride and humility after making his debut for the Nigerian national team in their 1-1 draw against Russia in an international friendly on Friday.
The 22-year-old entered the match in the 76th minute, replacing Getafe’s Chrisantus Uche, and made a lively contribution as Nigeria battled to a second-half equaliser through Tolu Arokodare.
Speaking after the match, Olusegun acknowledged the magnitude of the occasion and the competition for places in the Super Eagles squad.
"As for the atmosphere around the match, it was great. But, you know, it's not easy to play for the Nigerian national team in such a line-up. A lot of guys want to play – they have this opportunity,” Olusegun told Championat correspondent Vladislav Kruglov.
"Debuting for the Nigerian national team in a match against Russia is something special, but for me every game is special.
"It was not easy to debut against Russia, because they are not a small team."
Olusegun, who has impressed for Krasnodar in the Russian Premier League, looked composed during his brief appearance and contributed to Nigeria’s late push for a winner.
His pace and determination added energy to the right flank, and his introduction came during a promising spell for the Super Eagles.
The forward will now be hoping to build on this first cap and secure a more regular place in the squad as Nigeria prepare for the next round of international fixtures.
