Fact-check: Has David Okereke reached a verbal agreement with Kocaelispor?
Published: June 16, 2025
Reports suggesting that former Nigeria U23 international David Okereke has reached a verbal agreement with TFF First League champions Kocaelispor are inaccurate, allnigeriasoccer.com can report with certainty.
It was claimed that Kocaelispor, following their promotion to the Turkish top-flight, are looking to strengthen their attack and had set their sights on Okereke, who was said to have agreed personal terms.
However, there is no truth to the reports, with an incensed Okereke dismissing them as outright lies.
The 27-year-old insisted on Monday afternoon that he is not in talks with any club at the moment and expressed surprise over the source of the reports.
Okereke's representatives have also downplayed reports of an imminent move to Kocaelispor, emphasizing that while he has other options, nothing is concrete at this stage.
The Cremonese-owned attacker impressed during his loan spell at Gaziantep FK last season, recording nine goals and three assists in 29 Super Lig appearances.
His loan deal at Gaziantep FK included an option to buy but it remains unclear whether the south-central Turkish club will choose to activate it.
Okereke trained with the Super Eagles in March 2019 ahead of an international friendly against Egypt but remained an unused substitute.
