Brentford bolster midfield with new signing to challenge Super Eagles star Onyeka
Published: July 15, 2025
Brentford have strengthened their midfield options with the signing of Liverpool legend Jordan Henderson, who is set to provide competition for Nigeria international Frank Onyeka.
Henderson has inked a two-year deal, valid until June 30, 2027, the Bees officially reported on Tuesday morning.
A Champions League and Premier League winner, Henderson has returned to English football after stints with Saudi club Al-Ettifaq and Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam.
The signing of Henderson signals the club's intent to increase depth and quality in the centre of the park ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with Onyeka now facing fresh competition for a starting role.
The Super Eagles star was not guaranteed playing opportunities by Brentford's former coach Thomas Frank last term, leading to a loan spell at Augsburg, where he started 33 out of a possible 35 games in all competitions.
In a recent interview, Onyeka confirmed his return to Brentford following his loan spell at Augsburg and expressed his determination to catch the eye of newly appointed head coach Keith Andrews as preparations for the new season get underway.
Though committed to Brentford, the FC Ebedei product has caught the attention of La Liga club Valencia, leaving the possibility of a transfer before the window shuts still uncertain.
Since his celebrated move to the Gtech Community Stadium from FC Midtjylland in the summer of 2021, Onyeka has started 31 matches in the Premier League.
