2027 Afcon qualifier: Five observations from Super Eagles' 2-1 win over Madagascar

The Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Madagascar on Friday evening.

Nigeria secured all three points through goals from debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor, who overturned Ehsan Kari’s opening goal for Madagascar.

Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the clash

Nwabali returns in goal for Nigeria

Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali returned to goal for the Super Eagles after Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye arrived late to camp due to club commitments.

Nwabali delivered a strong performance for Nigeria, producing a brilliant save early in the second half to help the Super Eagles secure victory.

The goalkeeper will now hope to maintain his fine form and retain his place in the starting lineup, with Okoye having arrived in camp on Friday.

Ilenikhena and Usor score on Super Eagles debut

Former Monaco striker George Ilenikhena and LASK forward Moses Usor enjoyed impressive debuts for the Super Eagles against Madagascar.

Ilenikhena opened the scoring for Nigeria to restore parity, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner towards the end of the first half.

Meanwhile, Usor made the headlines with a brilliant solo goal in the second half, just minutes after his introduction. The LASK forward beat two defenders before firing past the goalkeeper at the near post.

Simon makes 100th appearance for Nigeria

Paris FC forward Moses Simon made his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles following his introduction in the second half against Madagascar.

Simon, who has been a key player for Nigeria over the years, replaced Akor Adams after the break.

Following his appearance, Simon joined Joseph Yobo (100), Vincent Enyeama (101), Ahmed Musa (110) and Alex Iwobi (100) in Nigeria’s 100-cap club.

Super Eagles produce strong second-half display

The Super Eagles produced a much-improved performance in the second half after a slow opening period in Uyo.

Nigeria regained control of the encounter and scored the winning goal through debutant Usor, who capped his first appearance with an impressive solo effort.

However, manager Eric Chelle will be disappointed with the team’s inability to extend their lead despite creating several opportunities in the second half.

Madagascar deploys counter-attacking approach

Madagascar adopted a strong defensive and counter-attacking approach against Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The approach proved effective in the first half, as the Barea scored an early goal and frustrated the Super Eagles before Nigeria eventually restored parity.

However, the Super Eagles neutralized Madagascar’s threat in the second half, with Nigeria scoring the winning goal just a few minutes after the restart.
