Ajax coach Michel Sánchez has backed Tolu Arokodare to play an important role for the Dutch giants after questions were raised over whether the Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee is primarily being used as an impact substitute.
Arokodare can provide a strong focal point against opponents who sit deep and defend in numbers, using his physical presence to occupy defenders and bring teammates into play.
The Nigeria international was introduced late in Ajax's 2-2 draw against Heerenveen on Sunday, coming on in the 87th minute as the hosts attempted to find a winner after surrendering a two-goal lead.
Arokodare's late introduction against Heerenveen prompted questions about his role in the squad, with Míchel asked whether the striker is viewed mainly as an impact substitute or if he is also capable of starting matches.
Michel was quoted as saying by
Ajax Life: "I have a plan for everyone. I brought Marcos Leonardo on earlier this time because I simply have a lot of confidence in him.
"He needs to get his minutes to get into shape. Furthermore, Tolu is a very good player for us.”
Arokodare is still waiting to make his first start for the Amsterdam club after three substitute appearances.
On his Eredivisie debut against PEC Zwolle, he came off the bench in the 73rd minute, before logging 33 minutes in the UEFA Conference League third qualifying-round clash with Shelbourne.
