Chibuike Nwaiwu has promised to continue his playful boot-cleaning celebration with his Super Eagles teammates as Nigeria begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar on Friday.
Nwaiwu, who earned his place in the Super Eagles squad following his performances for Trabzonspor, said he was delighted to be part of the national team and grateful for the opportunity to represent Nigeria.
Reflecting on his journey and his arrival in the Super Eagles camp, the defender expressed his gratitude to God and his determination to contribute to the team.
“First of all, I thank God for everything. I thank God for my life and for the journey so far. I feel so happy to be here and to give what I have for my country. I’m so happy,” he told Festus Dada.
The 23-year-old defender has established himself at Trabzonspor since joining the Turkish club in January 2026.
Speaking about his move to Trabzonspor and his experience with the club, Nwaiwu again credited his progress to his faith.
“I always say that everything I do is by the grace of God. Without His grace, I can do nothing. I feel so happy and so good to play for the team. I believe it is a very big club in Turkey and maybe in the world,” he added.
Nwaiwu has also attracted attention for his unusual goal celebration, which he carried out after Mohamed Salah scored a brace for Trabzonspor against Istanbul Basaksehir in August.
The Nigerian defender explained that the celebration is something he has adopted and brought with him to the national team.
“I think that is my special celebration, and I brought the celebration here too. Anyone who scores, I clean their boots,” Nwaiwu revealed.
The defender also spoke warmly about Salah, praising the Egyptian forward’s personality away from the pitch.
“Salah is a very big player, but he’s so humble and friendly. He doesn’t mind talking to everyone. He always wants to speak to everyone. He’s so humble, and I really like that about him,” he concluded.
