With a statement on the club’s official website, English Championship side Charlton Athletic have announced the signing of Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from Wrexham on a season-long loan.
The move sees the Nigeria international join Charlton after spending the previous campaign with Wrexham, where he established himself as an important member of the squad.
Okonkwo, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, previously represented England at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Nigeria.
FIFA approved the change in April 2026, paving the way for the goalkeeper to represent the Super Eagles at senior level.
The 24-year-old received his first Nigeria call-up from head coach Eric Chelle for the 2026 Unity Cup in May after his international switch was approved.
Okonkwo subsequently made his long-awaited Super Eagles debut on May 26, starting in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe at The Valley.
He kept a clean sheet as the Super Eagles advanced to the final of the tournament.
His debut marked the beginning of his senior international career with Nigeria after previously representing England at several youth levels, including the Under-18s.
Okonkwo will now continue his club career at Charlton, giving him the opportunity to compete for regular football in the Championship during the 2026/27 season.
The goalkeeper’s move also comes at an important stage of his career as he looks to maintain his position within the Super Eagles setup after making his senior international debut earlier this year.
