Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle is facing a selection dilemma following the return of Brentford defender Benjamin Fredrick to the national team ahead of Nigeria’s clash against Madagascar.
The Nigeria International made his Super Eagles debut during the 2025 Unity Cup in London after an impressive campaign with the club’s youth team.
Fredrick delivered a solid performance against Jamaica as Nigeria successfully retained the tournament following a victory on penalties.
He went on to establish himself as a regular member of the team, featuring in six matches against Rwanda, South Africa, Lesotho, Benin, Gabon, and DR Congo.
However, his progress was halted by an injury that ruled him out of the 2025 AFCON tournament and kept him sidelined for the entirety of the 2025/2026 campaign.
The youngster earned his return to the national team after recovering from the injury that kept him sidelined for a major part of last season in Belgium.
Following his return from injury, Semi Ajayi has formed a strong partnership with Fulham defender Calvin Bassey at the heart of the Super Eagles’ defence.
Ajayi delivered a solid and impressive performance at the AFCON tournament, helping Nigeria maintain a strong defensive record and finish among the tournament’s best defensive teams.
The Hull City defender faces strong competition for a starting position with the return of the Brentford defender to the squad.
Fredrick will provide a serious challenge with his solid defensive awareness, pace, intelligence, and ability to play out from the back.
The young defender also offers versatility, having the ability to operate at right-back, which could put him in contention for a starting berth ahead of Ajayi.
However, the former Arsenal defender will look to rely on his experience, aerial prowess, and match sharpness to strengthen his case for a starting role against Madagascar.
Fredrick will be eager to make his return in front of the home supporters and impress Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle with his performance.
Meanwhile, Ajayi will be determined to retain his place in the team as Nigeria look to secure a positive result against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
