Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has praised the performance of Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare following his impressive display in Ajax's 5-3 victory over FC Sion in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday night.
The Super Eagles striker, who was making his first start for the club, was on target twice as Ajax secured a convincing victory at the Johan Cruijff Arena, ensuring the Dutch giants progressed to the group stage of the competition.
Arokodare, who joined Ajax during the current summer window, opened the scoring towards the end of the first half after completing a well-worked team move.
The Nigerian international continued his impressive display after the restart, completing his brace by firing into the roof of the net after FC Sion failed to clear a cross from Abdellah Ouazane.
Speaking during the half-time analysis of the encounter on Ziggo Sport, Van der Vaart praised Arokodare's finishing ability and his impact after coming into the team.
"Everything is going against his competitor Leonardo, and he just swings at the ball and scores," Van der Vaart said.
The former Dutch international also stressed that Arokodare should not be viewed as a player who can only make an impact from the bench, insisting that the Nigerian striker offers much more to Ajax.
"He is more than a pinch hitter. He has a good presence and is a real presence," he added.
Van der Vaart further praised the aerial ability of the 25-year-old, highlighting his effectiveness in aerial duels since making the move to the Johan Cruijff Arena.
"I feel like he doesn't lose any aerial duels either. Great impression," Van der Vaart concluded.
Arokodare has made an impressive start to life at Ajax, scoring three goals and providing two assists in five appearances across all competitions.
The Nigerian will now be keen to maintain his impressive form and continue establishing himself as an important figure for Ajax as the season progresses.
