'It felt right' - Lampard explains why Awoniyi played just 25 minutes against Arsenal

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has explained why new signing Taiwo Awoniyi was introduced in the final 20 minutes of their 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

The Nigerian striker, who joined the Sky Blues during the current summer transfer window, was brought on in the second half, replacing Ellis Simms as Coventry looked to change the course of the game.

Awoniyi showcased a decent performance following his introduction, with the forward offering a threat through his movement and presence in the final third during his limited time on the pitch.

Speaking to Coventry City Media after the game, Lampard explained that Awoniyi’s minutes were restricted because he had not accumulated enough match time since the start of pre-season.

The former Chelsea midfielder revealed that the Nigerian had mainly been involved in basic training over the past 10 days but felt introducing him for the final 20 to 25 minutes was the right decision.

Lampard also praised the early signs from Awoniyi, noting that the striker showed some encouraging qualities despite his limited match fitness.

“They {the new player} need some time. Taiwo came on for 20 or 25 minutes,” Lampard said. “It felt right because in the last ten days his legs have not been full of match minutes, just bits of training.”

He further noted that the Nigerian striker showed encouraging signs despite his limited preparation.

“But, I thought he showed some basic stuff for us,” he concluded.

The former Union Berlin striker will be eager to rediscover his best form and secure regular playing time as he looks to help the newly promoted club retain their Premier League status.
