Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo says securing victory is more important than keeping a clean sheet when Nigeria face Madagascar in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Okonkwo has kept clean sheets in each of his first two appearances for Nigeria, against Zimbabwe and Jamaica, but he's in line to make his first competitive appearance for the Super Eagles in Friday's clash against Madagascar.
The Charlton Athletic goalkeeper is also hoping to get an opportunity to compete for a starting place after being included in the squad for the latest international window.
Okonkwo was among the twenty-three players that trained at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, under the guidance of manager Eric Chelle.
"It's same as last camp. I'm just learning as I go along. The managers and everyone have made me feel welcome. I'm just waiting for an opportunity and when that opportunity comes, I have to take it," Okonkwo told TVC News.
Okonkwo was also encouraged by the atmosphere within the squad following Tuesday's training session, although he expects preparations to intensify as the match draws closer.
"Today (Tuesday) was a lighter session because we all had our first day today, but things will ramp up from Wednesday. We are just focused and preparing for the game on Friday," he said.
Okonkwo insists the Super Eagles' primary objective is to secure maximum points rather than focus solely on keeping a clean sheet.
"The most important thing is us winning, more than the clean sheet. Of course it would be nice to have a clean sheet as well but the team and everyone's mind is focused on defeating the two teams which gives us a good place in our group. So I am not too worried about clean sheets."
Okonkwo was an unused substitute in Nigeria's last two friendly matches against Poland and Portugal in June 2026.
